DSB Danske Statsbaner, Shunting Locomotive Litra ML 6.
For many enthusiasts it was surprising that Danish State Railways (DSB) long classified this vehicle as a shunting tractor in their “Driftsmateriel I” register, listing it under “Tractors” as no. 6 rather than giving it a locomotive class. Considering its weight (52.1 t, comparable to class MT) and the fact that the lighter MH class carried a locomotive letter, it seems odd DSB kept it downgraded. In summer 1966 the error was finally acknowledged: Tractor no. 6 was reclassified as class ML, keeping the same number. Although only a single example existed, its eventful history makes it noteworthy.
DSB Tractor No. 6 was built in spring 1945 at Derby Works, England (serial 70273) for the British War Department. It served with British occupying forces, performing shunting and light line work in northern Ruhr, later laid up at Hamm depot in 1953 as German railways rebuilt their fleets. In 1957 the Danish firm Rask Pedersen & Dalsgaard A/S discovered the machine and alerted DSB. After inspection, DSB found it in good condition and useful for shunting duties amid a shortage of modern traction. Negotiations with the British succeeded, and the locomotive was purchased in December 1957 and sent to the central workshop in Copenhagen. After a short overhaul it entered service in Denmark as Tractor No. 6 in early 1958 and in 1966 was rightly reclassified as a motor locomotive (litra ML).
