Diesel Locomotive DSB MZ 1414

Overview

DSB MZ 1414 is an iconic Danish diesel-electric locomotive and part of the well-known MZ family. It belongs to the second series of MZ locomotives, built by the Swedish company NOHAB under licence from General Motors (EMD).

For many decades, the MZ class formed the backbone of DSB’s heavy freight and passenger services. The locomotives are known for their considerable power and reliability. The MZ II series, numbered 1411–1426, was largely identical to the first series, although it included a number of technical modifications.

Historical timeline for MZ 1414

  • 1970: The locomotive was built by NOHAB.
  • 27 April 1970: It arrived in Helsingør and entered service.
  • 1970–1982: It was primarily based in the western part of Denmark, including Jutland and Funen.
  • 1982: It was transferred to the eastern part of the country, including Zealand.
  • Later years: After completing its service with DSB, the locomotive was renumbered RDK MZ 1414 under Railion Danmark, later known as Rail Danmark.

Over the years, the MZ locomotives have achieved cult status among railway enthusiasts and model railway collectors. MZ 1414 remains a popular subject because of its long and important role in Danish railway history.
