The Märklin 6021 Control Unit is a classic and legendary digital controller for model trains, introduced by Märklin in 1993 as the heart of their "Märklin Digital" system at the time. Although it has since been surpassed by modern touch-screen stations like the Märklin Central Station (CS3), the 6021 is still highly valued and used on many older digital layouts due to its extreme reliability and robust build quality.
Here are the key details about the Märklin 6021:
  • Function and Capacity: The unit functions as a combined central unit and throttle. It can independently control up to 80 locomotives (addresses 1–80), control the locomotive's headlights (Function), and activate four additional auxiliary functions.
  • Digital Format: It operates on the original Märklin Motorola (MM) format. While it cannot control newer mfx or DCC decoders with their full range of modern features, mfx locomotives can almost always run on a 6021 layout using their fallback Motorola address.
  • Modular Design: One of the most ingenious aspects of the 6021 era was its modular system. The unit can be clipped together with other control modules on either side via built-in connectors:
    • Märklin 6040 (Keyboard): For controlling turnouts and signals.
    • Märklin 6036 (Control 80f): Additional throttles, allowing multiple operators to run trains simultaneously.
    • Märklin 6051 (Interface): For connecting the system to a computer.
  • Power Supply: It receives power from a transformer (such as the Märklin 6002, 52 VA) and feeds both power and digital signals into the tracks.
