Prototype History – DB ICE 2

  • Introduced by Deutsche Bahn in 1995–1997 as the second generation of German high-speed trains.
  • Designed as a more flexible version of the ICE 1, using shorter trainsets and separable power cars, making it easier to adapt to route demand.
  • Standard formation:
    • 1 power car
    • 6 intermediate coaches
    • 1 driving trailer (cab car)
  • Top speed: 280 km/h (174 mph) in regular service.
  • Operates mainly on long-distance routes such as Berlin–Cologne, Hamburg–Frankfurt, and Munich–Berlin.
  • Features improved passenger comfort, quieter running, and updated interior design compared to the ICE 1.
  • Many ICE 2 trainsets later refurbished with updated electronics, modernized cabins, and new passenger amenities.
