Prototype background

The EMD F40PH became one of the most recognisable American passenger locomotives. It played a major role in the development of modern commuter rail services in the United States. Although it was originally closely associated with Amtrak, many locomotives later found a new lease of life with regional commuter railways.

Chicago Metra continues to use the F40PH alongside newer locomotive types. Locomotive #174 carries the “Fox River Grove” name, referring to the Illinois community.
