DSB Tender Locomotive D 804

The "D 804" locomotive is one of more than 100 locomotives in the DSB Class D series, which was the backbone of the Danish State Railways' (DSB) freight operations for nearly half a century.

History of the DSB Class D

  • The Backbone of Freight: The DSB Class D locomotives were introduced in 1902 and quickly became the standard freight locomotive for the Danish State Railways. Because of their reliability and versatility, they remained in heavy, daily service until the early 1950s.
  • Design: These were 0-8-0 steam locomotives, which meant they had eight driving wheels and no leading or trailing truck wheels. This configuration provided excellent traction and power for pulling the heavy freight trains that were essential for the Danish economy during the early 20th century.
  • Manufacturing: The locomotives were built by various manufacturers, including Borsig, Frichs, and others, spanning a delivery period that lasted for several years as the railway network expanded.
  • Retirement: By the early 1950s, the class began to be phased out as diesel locomotives (like the iconic Class MY and later designs) started taking over the freight network. While they were retired from mainline service, their legacy is significant, and they are well-remembered by rail enthusiasts and modelers in Denmark.
