The prototype
The DSB MT 101 was Denmark's first diesel-electric locomotive, built in 1927 by Vognfabrikken Scandia in Randers. Along with its five sister engines (numbered 101–106), this locomotive marked the beginning of DSB's transition from steam to diesel power on its minor branch lines.
The rolling post office in teakwood
What made the MT 101 and the rest of its class truly unique was its structural design. Instead of being a standard tractor unit, the locomotive featured a teakwood-clad carriage body that housed both a luggage compartment and a fully equipped postal sorting room. The postal compartment even came with a classic tiled stove to keep the postal staff warm during transit. Because of this design, the locomotive looked more like a sturdy, old-fashioned passenger or baggage car than a traditional locomotive.

Service History and Later Years
The MT 101 began its career in DSB's 1st District (Zealand/Falster) from 1927 to 1929. In May 1930, the locomotive was transferred to Tønder in Southern Jutland, where it spent the 1930s running on regional branch lines.
During World War II, severe fuel shortages forced DSB to withdraw the MT 101 from active service, and it was stored in Tønder from 1941 to 1943. While it was officially retired from regular service in 1943, its story did not end there. In 1944, DSB sent the unit to the Central Workshops in Aarhus (Cvk Ar), where it was converted into a breakdown van (Hjælpevogn A+B 11) used for clearing railway accidents and derailments.
