History of SJ Steam Locomotive F 1207

To replace the underpowered A-series, SJ developed a new express locomotive with greater power and speed: the F series. Built between 1914 and 1916, eleven F-class locomotives were produced, designed as four-cylinder compound engines with Walschaerts valve gear and a Pacific 4-6-2 wheel arrangement. Their design was likely inspired by the Württemberg C class.

In 1918, oil lighting was replaced by Dahlén gas lighting, and in 1922, vacuum brakes were upgraded to Kunze-Knorr air brakes.

These locomotives hauled heavy express trains between Stockholm and Malmö, later operating out of Norrköping and Nässjö. After electrification of the main lines, the F-class was sold to the Danish State Railways (DSB) in 1937, reclassified as type E. They remained in service in Denmark until 1970.
