DSB Steam Locomotive PR 905, Sound

DSB Litra PR – Rebuilt P-machines

In the 1940s and 1950s, DSB rebuilt seven of its older P-machines into the improved litra PR. The conversion gave better acceleration and maintained high speed, and the locomotives were primarily used in Jutland in front of both freight and passenger trains.

The PR locomotives were based on German P-machines from 1907–1910. The conversion was initiated due to a locomotive shortage and the desire to free up the worn-out K-machines on the West Jutland Railways. Reusing parts from the P-machines and the spare parts warehouse was necessary due to material shortages during the war.

The first rebuilt machine, PR 904, was tested in 1943 and proved to be a success – fast, strong and reliable. The remaining six PR machines (including 905, 930 and 921) were rebuilt until 1954.

The Litra PR became a symbol of DSB's technical adaptability and remained in service for several decades as reliable workhorses.
