The SNCB 5401 is a legendary Belgian heavy diesel-electric locomotive, part of the SNCB Class 54 (originally designated as Type 204). Built in 1957, it is celebrated by railfans for its distinct American-inspired appearance and powerful performance.

  • The "NOHAB" Connection: The locomotive was built by the Belgian manufacturer Anglo-Franco-Belge (AFB) under a license from the Swedish builder NOHAB and General Motors (GM-EMD). It utilized a reliable GM 16-cylinder 567C diesel engine.
  • Nicknames: Due to its bulbous, rounded aerodynamic ends inherited from the American GM F-series design, it was affectionately nicknamed "Gros Nez" (Big Nose) in French and "Bolneus" in Dutch.
  • Built for Speed: While its sibling classes (Class 52 and 53) were capped at 120 km/h, Class 54 was engineered for a top speed of 140 km/h. This made 5401 and its seven sister units ideal for pulling prestigious, international Trans-Europ-Express (TEE) and long-distance passenger trains between France, Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands.
  • The Cabin Evolution: In the late 1970s and 1980s, the locomotive underwent a major modernization program. The original rounded noses were replaced on most units with distinct, blockier "floating cabs" (cabine flottante) to improve crash safety and noise insulation for the train drivers.
  • Retirement: The class was gradually phased out around 2002 as major Belgian rail lines became fully electrified. While 5401 was scrapped, its sister unit 5404 has been preserved in its original "Gros Nez" design and is on display at the national railway museum "Train World" in Brussels.
